The Art of Craft: In partnership with London Craft Week

Current exhibition
25 April - 30 May 2025
  • Overview
The Art of Craft, In partnership with London Craft Week

This year Crane Court Gallery will participate in London Craft Week with an exciting and engaging curated selection of artists and makers working across a diverse range of mediums.

Craft encompasses many aspects of art, design and functionality, it can be minimalist and maximalist, it can tell a story and create conversation, it can educate and inspire. The essence of all craft though is the presence of the hand of the maker. This can be overt with marks made in clay through pressure and gesture or almost imperceptible with objects formed in metal and silver appearing almost too perfect to have been shaped by hand. Indeed, each craftsperson, through years and decades of honing their respective skills, has gained a mastery of their medium which allows them to reveal and conceal their hand or simply let the material speak for itself and tell us its own story.

FIVE is a platform celebrating contemporary silver and metal, fostering new dialogues about material and craft. For London Craft Week, the FIVE collective will showcase a diverse selection ofcontemporary metalwork, featuring both precious and non-precious metals by artists Angela Cork, Jessica Jue, Ane Christensen, Hamish Dobbie, and Patrick Davison.

Oliver Spendley creates totemic sculpture & furniture focused around monolithic stone and how that stone is held. Working in the remote north coast of Scotland Oliver draws on the immense natural world surrounding him. Creating works utilising materials from the woodlands, mountains and coves in close reach.

Danni Bradford practices the classical art of Verre églomisé, the technique of gilding glass using pigments and precious metal leaf and will be hosting a demonstration of her craft for the public.

Gillian Adair's work investigates the space between things, transitions in states of being and connections through responses to the passage of time.

Katharine Swailes works from the studios of Atelier Weftfaced. She produces wall based handwoven abstract tapestries using traditional materials such as wool, linen, cotton and gilt.

Claire Malet makes  objects using re-cycled precious and non-precious metals and 'found' materials. She works intuitively and experimentally, allowing and encouraging the innate characteristics of the medium to emerge.

Daniel Freyne, is a scottish artist with a unique journey, formally trained as a blacksmith, his work is a modern representation of a timeless craft.

Sollai Cartwright is a contemporary sculptor renowned for his marble and bronze sculptures, bridging ancient traditions with contemporary expression. Based in countryside Australia, he studied carving in Pietrasanta, Italy, under Italy's Artigiani and returns annually to collect marble from its quarries.

The exhibition runs from April 25th till May 30th inclusive.

A PDF catalogue with details for all artworks can be sent on request.
